Martial Arts for Men and Women Over 40
If you’re over 40 years old and you’re considering taking up an exercise program or any physical activity, then let me be the first to say, BRAVO! You’re doing the right thing.
Plenty of studies out there showing the benefits of physical activity for men and women over forty. I’m going to be a little biased… OK, a lot biased but I love martial arts and I have dedicated my life to it.
Martial art training for men and women over 40 can be very rewarding and you can’t put a price on the health benefits…
Why Do People Over 40 Stop Training?
It’s because oftentimes you forget that you’re not 20 anymore. It’s a sad reality of growing older. Your mind says, “GO ALL IN!” but your body says, “Whoa, slow down for Pete’s sake…we’re no spring chicken anymore!”
This is probably the number one reason adults over forty never continue their training. They try to go too hard, too fast, and too soon without gradually settling into their martial arts training (or any activity). I get it, martial arts is fun, it’s unique, and you probably don’t know any people who train.
That puts you in a category all your own.
Martial Arts is Fun, So Enjoy it!
Martial arts is about leaving your ego at the door and enjoying the journey.
If you’re new to martial arts training, then perhaps finding a dojo where the instructor is closer to 40 would be a better fit. They’ll understand that you need to take it slow and if they’re good they’ll tell you that before you tell yourself that.
The Benefits of training Martial arts over 40
- Make New Friends

As you can see, there’s a lot of positive to be gained from martial arts if you allow your body to speak to you, if you listen to your body, and take it easy as you start your new lifestyle.
At the Budo Shingikan Dojo, it’s important to us that you embrace the martial arts lifestyle and reap the benefits as long as possible into adulthood. Yes, people in their 80’s and 90’s are still training and still living life to the fullest.
